A few weeks ago, I found myself at the beach in Normandy Park, Washington, with Valerie and Zach—and let me tell you, it was basically the dream summer evening. Warm breeze, golden hour magic, and just the right amount of salty air. We kicked off their beach engagement session with the best kind of chaos: sand, sunshine, and their ridiculously adorable Golden Retriever, Rosie. She’s not just photogenic—she’s a scene-stealer. I was obsessed within five minutes. (Honestly? Still am.)

We started out in the dappled light of some blooming trails just off the beach, soaking in that early evening calm. Washington in June can be unpredictable, but this day? Absolutely nailed it. Once the sun dipped low enough to bathe everything in that golden glow, we made a beeline for the sand. Barefoot, laughing, and chasing the last rays of light—there was no holding back.

Valerie and Zach were so easy to photograph. They had that effortless chemistry that makes my job feel more like hanging out with old friends than working. You could tell right away that they’re best friends at the core—totally themselves, completely comfortable, and always finding reasons to laugh. Any hint of camera shyness vanished once I got them moving with some fun prompts (and maybe a few silly poses thrown in for good measure).

And let’s not forget Rosie, their four-legged third wheel, who was living her best beach life—splashing in the waves, chasing sticks, and occasionally photobombing with her giant goofy grin. Honestly, I think she knew she was the star.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and the sky lit up in shades of pink and orange, we wrapped things up with a few last shots in the surf. It was one of those sessions that just felt good from start to finish. The kind that makes you grateful for summer nights, couples in love, and dogs who steal the show.

Cheers to Valerie, Zach, and Rosie for bringing all the good vibes. If this evening was any indication, their wedding is going to be something truly special.
